Youth Alcohol Abuse, The Connection Between Hazardous Drinking And Coping Skills, And The Need For Coping Skills Education
Recent teenage alcohol abuse statistics reveal that alcohol abuse among teens is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? Quite a few alcohol abuse authorities assert that wine, liquor, and beer ads created by the media are a fundamental reason for the escalation of teen alcohol abuse.
Other alcohol addiction experts believe that the increase in teen alcohol abuse is due to the acceptability and convenience of liquor, wine, and beer in our society. Still other alcoholism authorities declare that more than a few of our young people engage in abusive drinking because of the increased fretfulness that they undergo.
From a somewhat different outlook, since both parents in quite a few families work full or part-time, the lack of parental supervision positively has to play a significant role in the proliferation of teen alcohol abuse. And last but not least, an assortment of alcohol addiction professionals assert that the rise in teen alcohol abuse is due, at some level, to our laissez-faire society.
One component of adolescent alcohol abuse that looks like it is under reported in the alcohol addiction research literature, nevertheless, is the lack of educational courses that teach teens how to improve upon their coping skills so that their excessive and unhealthy drinking behavior is extensively lessened or eradicated. Stated differently, science has demonstrated that there is an indirect link between poor coping skills and abusive and unhealthy drinking.
In essence, this means that the worse the coping skills, the greater the frequency of alcohol abuse. To the degree that this is a correct assertion, why isn't coping skills training an important part of the educational prospectus in all of our junior high schools, elementary schools, and high schools?
Let us manufacture a scenario for the purpose of explanation. Let us imagine a society in which all people are trained how to develop solid coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including their final year in high school. In such a society, when life gets stressful, people who are "coping skills experts" will be able to respond in a more healthy and more creative way, as opposed to others who fail to put their coping skills into practice.
Stated differently, students who reveal first-class coping skills will be more able to think clearly and demonstrate top-shelf decision making as opposed to teens were unsuccessful in their attempts to develop good coping skills, gravitate to the "quick fix" of hazardous drinking.
What would happen in the above "ideal" society, in addition, if adolescents not only got excellent coping skills instruction but also got an excellent education that focused on the short term and long term negative costs associated with alcohol abuse and drug abuse? Emphasizing these teenage alcohol and drug abuse facts, along with more highly developed coping skills instruction, it is affirmed, would help teenagers avoid the apparent charm associated with youth drinking and, accordingly, would drastically lessen the dangerous drinking behavior shown by adolescents in our country.
There are surely numerous valid reasons why so many of our teens drink in a destructive manner. Such a thorny subject matter demands a wide-ranging and more applicable response by our parents, educators, politicians, and students so that our teenagers can learn how to cope with life's problems in a more productive and accountable manner rather than gravitating to unhealthy and excessive drinking to solve their difficulties.
