How To Tell If You Are Going Through A Panic Attack By Looking At The Symptoms You Are Experiencing

When you are in some occupations it is hard to disconnect yourself from work because people like to request advice. This is something that I experience very often because I'm a social worker. When people find this out they like to request my opinion about what they ought to do about different situations, generally involving one of their neighbors or relatives. This can become annoying, but being in a helping profession this is part of the job. Many individuals do not know where to turn to access services for mental health needs, therefore they find it more comfortable to ask someone they know how to do this.

The majority of the members of our church know that I'm a social worker. We had an incident that occurred during a church function which called for my expertise. We were gathered in our fellowship area for a potluck supper one Sunday evening. One of the parish members was sitting off by themselves. I have spoken to her at other functions and she has told me that she has problems with anxiety. When I saw her I observed that her complexion was flushed and she seemed to be having a challenging time regulating her breathing. I saw the early symptoms of an anxiety attack. I knew that they would get worse rather swiftly. I quietly asked our minister if he would open his office. I went over to the lady and asked her to come in to the minister's office with me. When we were walking toward the office she told me that she was having sharp chest pains. She doesn't have a past record of cardiac disease so I thought that the pains were another of the symptoms of an anxiety assault. When we were inside the office I had her concentrate on doing some deep breathing exercises with me. I peacefully rubbed her hands and continued repeating the instructions for the breathing that I was doing with her. She had once been heavily perspiring so I opened a window, although it was very cold outside. The cold air along with the deep breathing started to calm her. She admitted that she had been very anxious over the past few days and that she had not taken her medicine that day. As we talked the majority of the symptoms of the anxiety assault dissipated.

Our church is very close to a hospital and I asked her if she wished to be checked there to ensure that the chest pains had once been part of the anxiety. She informed me that she was certain they were and that if she had just a few more moments to compose herself she thought she would have the capacity to leave for home. I told her that nobody in the meeting had noticed our departure because they were conversing and having crudite. She agreed to join me in the party with the promise that I would take her home the moment she asked. She ended up staying for the majority of the evening. She informed me when I drove her home that if she had once been alone she would have called an ambulance because she thought the symptoms of the anxiety assault were a heart attack instead. I told her that this was a common mistake and that she should be more aware of how her apprehension affects her.
