A Young Gentleman Needs Therapy For His Acute Depression, Relationship Problems, And For His Substance Abuse
Approximately three months ago I had dinner with a thirty-seven-year-old man named Benjamin who suffers from intense depression, has relationship problems, and who is alcohol and drug dependent. As affirmed by Benjamin, it is his alcohol and drug dependency and his severe depression that has had the most to do with his continual relationship problems.
As articulated by Benjamin, he is so overcome by his relationship difficulties and by both of his medical problems that he basically has little or no driving force to do much of anything. What is particularly unfortunate about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin finished three semesters of grad school in entrepreneurship.
Benjamin's situation makes me wonder if he is an illustration of an individual who can look in the mirror and see his drug addiction and drinking problems and do something healthy about these problems. Or, conversely, if he is an individual who has to hit rock-bottom before he gets drug and alcohol counseling that results in long-term sobriety.
It may be asked how rehabilitation would help his alcohol and drug addiction. For starters, there are a number of newly created physician-prescribed drugs that can help Benjamin through his withdrawal symptoms, through the drug and alcohol detoxification process, and help him avoid an alcohol or a drug relapse. Second, in rehab he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the various stages of alcoholism.
Third, Benjamin would learn to acknowledge the fact that there is completely nothing productive about drug abuse and excessive and abusive drinking. In a similar way, he would also learn that engaging in one or both of these unhealthy conditions is the road to poor work and school performance, legal problems, shattered relationships, deteriorating health, financial difficulties, and a premature death. Fourth, counseling for his depression and for his relationship issues might help him manage these conditions more effectively and help create less of a need for him to engage in additive behavior. And finally,in rehabilitation he could also learn more about the diverse symptoms of alcoholism that he has displayed.
Since Benjamin lacks the willpower to do much of anything in his life, it is evident that he urgently needs a little hope for a better existence. And the sad thing is that hope is all around Benjamin if he could only get to the point in life to get the therapy he needs for his severe depression and alcohol dependency and drug addiction and continue with his treatment protocol.
Benjamin is clearly too young to be beaten in life. He doesn't understand this right now but if he can learn how to refrin from alcohol and drugs via alcohol and drug therapy and get the treatment he requires for his extreme depression, he can turn his life around and start living with self-respect, passion, and direction.
More positive relationships, a wonderful life, self respect, and beneficial change are clearly a reality for Benjamin. But only if he can get inspired to get the medical treatment he requires, follow through with his treatment regimen, live his life in a sober and healthy manner, and learn how to acquire a more positive attitude about his life.
