A Health And Physical Education Instructor Teaches Her Students About The Important Issues Involved In Alcohol Addiction Signs

Miss Jackson was a health instructor at the most financially challenged co-educational high school in the region. Although she had been teaching for only five years, she had already achieved a reputation as an educator with a teaching approach that inspired and motivated students to learn and to think.

As an illustration, one Thursday morning she addressed the pupils in her class and articulated the following: "For the next week we are going to learn about some basic alcoholism signs from a more broad-based perspective and we are also going to learn about several of the best known signs of alcoholism from a more detailed point of view."

"Not every one of these alcoholism warning signs will definitely confirm that someone with a drinking problem is an alcohol dependent individual, but the more signs that a person manifests, the greater the possibility that she or he is an alcohol addicted individual."

Miss Jackson then explained to the class that each individual would be accountable for examining two alcohol addiction signs and then presenting his or her conclusions to the rest of the class by way of a fifteen minute oral presentation.

The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a piece of paper with a list of all the alcohol addiction signs that were presented and discussed in class and in the presentations. Miss Jackson then asked her pupils to go over the list and rank the top ten alcohol dependency signs that were most indicative of alcohol addiction. After approximately fifteen minutes, Miss Jackson collected the sheets of paper and informed her students that after she evaluates the numbers, she will reveal her findings the morning of the next school day.

Miss Jackson asked her students to go over the data on the sheet of paper she handed out and then to raise their hand if they had any issues, questions, or concerns. Within a minute or two, virtually every pupil in the classroom raised her or his hand. It was evident that the students had some concerns, issues, or questions about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism authorities. As an illustration, almost every individual in the classroom had an issue with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism specialists, to be exact, "Do you feel exceedingly ill when you abstain from drinking?"

Miss Jackson then explained to the students in her classroom why this answer was the most clear-cut sign of alcohol dependency. She underlined the fact that the primary difference between alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcohol addiction and not with alcohol abuse.

Fundamentally this means that when an alcohol dependent individual suddenly quits drinking, she or he will suffer through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the relevance of alcohol withdrawals in the life of the individual who is addicted to alcohol, the pupils started to comprehend the main difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism.

A few minutes later the bell rang, signaling the end of class. Based on the excitement manifested by the pupils when they were leaving the room, Miss Jackson knew that she had stimulated and encouraged her pupils to stop and think about an essential health issue and social problem that exists in our society.
